The Rabbit Journal Tales

Archives

This is the archive for January 2006

I've decided to blow off the last day of deer season

here is Alabama.
The laptop has suffered a catastrophic hardware failure and the tower is on loan to 2, my father.
So, I've decided to go down to apalachicola and try for a redfish or two and some speckled trout before the season closes and the rabbit season really starts to hum.
Back in a couple of days.

djmed's hunt

I don’t know about Brag and djmed, but my ears burned on the trip back from our Saturday rabbit hunt on djmed’s lease. That is, at least as far as Jeffersonville, Georgia before the sound of snores caused the burning to go away.

The subject of the conversation in the dog box was the un-stunning showing of marksmanship by the hunters.
Julie was saying to the other four rabbit dogs that make up The Rabbit Journal pack “ Did you see “boss” miss those two shots at a rabbit in the wide open? After he fire that second barrel, I thought he was going to fall off that log.
Since she didn’t “travel” well, Kate responded from her individual box . “And how about Brag?
djmed
Brag
Finest shot in these parts, No Brag, Just fact.?”
“Pleaaase! One for four and that one was a stray that we weren’t even running.”

It looks like

it's going to be a three man team, djmed, Brag and myself-rimfire, and our five dog's consisting of Julie, Dixie, Maizie, Kate and our puppy Lucy on our hunt with djmed near Irington, Georgia.

djmed wants to know what the record for the most rabbits killed by East Alabama Rabbit Hunters and Souse Eaters Social Club. I'd have to dig back through the archieves, but I'll let you know how we do.

Meanwhile it's January in mid-east Alabama

Rest in Peace

djmed sends

a couple of pics of a 90 pound boar he killed on his clubs lease in Georgia.
The reason I'm posting the pic here is that Brag and I have a rabbit hunt planned there for Saturday. While Lucy might run an occasional deer, I've got a feeling she won't run but one of these.
djmed is the one on the right

The t-shirts are in

For “The East Alabama Rabbit Hunters and Souse Eaters Social Club”

Djmed and Master Graphics located in Auburn, Alabama are the official t-shirt outfitters for both redneckin (fine redneckin shirts) and The Rabbit Journal. They have done their usual fine job. Some like the grey, but I like the Auburn (what else?) orange. They are Haines Beefy T's, a good quality t shirt. I have a very limited few extras, if anyone wants to order one

If you’d like to order custom t’s on good quality shirts at a reasonable price from Master Graphics, drop djmed a line at

Here are a few pics that don’t really do justice

Looking for rabbit hunters in the Sand Mountain area of Alabama

Patrick in the comment section of the previous post is a transplanted yankee (don’t hold it against him,,,diversity and all, you know?) rabbit hunter from Indiana and is looking for information or local rabbit hunters.

Our rabbit hunting fraternity is to small as it is, so if you have any information for him drop him a line at pmoffatt at bellsouth dot net

Heck if you’re a deer hunter, your season is fixing to end anyway and it’s a great way to do some after season scouting to see what you’ve been missing in those tangles you’ve been avoiding.

And if your from other areas, still drop me a line so that I can set up some type of clearing house of exchanges

Good Morning

Today is the annual Robert E. Lee, Martin Luther King Diversity Day Rabbit Hunt.

Update

The rabbit dogs,

Julie, Dixie, Maizie, Kate and Lucy got their heart worm pills today

I wonder what size shot we would use

"Scientists set to create human-rabbit hybrid"

7 1/2 shot seems a little small, maybe a 4?

Hunting WestWind

this morning.

On a sadder note: Uncle NoPass is in the hospital

Middle Boy and my grandson,

“Only Boy, were at the cable blocking the yard of the abandoned farm house waiting on us. Now “Only Boy” is 5 years old and kind of scrawny. Right now about the best I could expect would be for him to carry one smallish buck rabbit or maybe two small sage’ers.
middle boy, only boy and Rye
You understand, there are dues to be paid in return for me imparting my vast store of woodlore.

Well, Middle Boy didn’t lie, djmed.
If anything the briars were tougher and meaner and taller and sharper and thornier and thicker than your hunt there a couple of years ago

We're rabbit hunting

Mr. Murty's place tomorrow morning. It's near where the old Salem-Shotwell Covered bridge used to stand.
There's only enough property for a half day hunt. The briars are particulary vicious. Middle Boy tells me that if anything the briars out there are worse than ever. Something that djmed would tell you about if he wasn't off in the woods his own self.

What a way to end a year!

Lucy, the “Beaner”, part beagle and part wiener dog, violated a cardinal rule of rabbit dogs…..don’t miss your ride home.

Now why Brag’s puppy would want to misbehave like that I don’t have a clue. I know that my dogs never run nothing but a rabbit. They’re the best rabbit dogs in these parts. Why everybody says so.
But Brag’s……
For further details concerning ownership.

But the last we heard was her burning up a deer’s trail with Lady in tow. Lady came back a hour or so later. Lucy, as I write this, is still missing.

Lucy has not yet had the collar used on her and today was merely a continuation of not using it on her. Brag seems to be of the opinion that I somehow bear partial responsibility for his puppy running a deer and getting lost. While it is true that I left the “clicker”
electric pine limb
for the electric pine limb with it's eight levels of "stimulation" on the flower box, it is sort of his fault because he required help loading the dogs requiring me to set it down in the first place.
