I got the deer leg out
I came in early from the deer hunt, climbing down from my stand at exactly ten. I was to meet GF and her parents, brother and grandmother for lunch on GF's __th birthday. And besides, I needed to rest up in case GF got lucky tonight.
My generosity knows
no bounds.
I didn't see squat and neither did any of the other boys in camp. The scrape was freshened up sometime between leaving my stand yesterday morning and this morning. Since we won't be chasing bunnies till Thursday, I plan to give it another shot tomorrow morning.
Abbie was first. She hesitated but the smell was just to enticing. I nailed her and she squalled her way back to the pen. I'm hoping a little aversion therapy will stop Abbie before any habits start.
Lucy took one smell and ran to my feet.
So far, so good. Now to get a rabbit to drag around for a few days

With a east wind, I think I'll sit where I killed the doe.
Almost forgot
Happy __th Birthday, GF!!!!!

I killed a young doe,
a suitcase deer, the day after Thanksgiving. After I quartered her, I cut the two hind legs off with a set of pruning lopers and wrapped them good in plastic before putting them on ice.
Yesterday, I put the
“collars” on Lucy and Abbie, then I went and drug a leg across the backyard.
Lucy was first. She raced across the yard and almost somersaulted when she hit the deer smell. She tracked it the 15 yards to it’s hiding place. I popped her on “3”. She yelped and ran back to the pen.
Abbie to found the smell interesting and she got similar treatment.
Today, Lucy hit the track and immediently ran over to me. Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me.
Abbie, though, once again trailed the deer’s leg. First, I nicked her and watched her jump, then pick up the trail again. This time as she reached to the leg, I nailed her on “3” continuous. She ran back to the pen.
Now I have a decision to make. Let it rest a few days till I get a rabbit to drag before doing the deer treatment again or just go ahead with the deer scent

Speaking of
duct tape, did you know that I had a general store at my sister blog, "redneckin"?
Two of the most popular items were the coffee cup holders and the "do it yourself" nicotine patches.
Just make the checks out to cash

The Downtown Columbus paper,
the Ledger Enquirer has a reprint of Byran Brasher's article in the Memphis Commercial Appeal on
hunting dog first aid. It's a pretty good read.
Old wash cloths for washing big areas
Hydrogen peroxide to induce vomiting in case of accidental poisoning
Commercial ice packs like the ones used to treat sports injuries
Kaopectate liquid to treat diarrhea
Benadryl (give 1-2 mg per pound every eight hours to treat bee stings or bug bites or 4 mg per pound for snakebites).
Buffered aspirin (give 5 mg very 12 hours for pain). Make sure the pill does not contain caffeine or other additives. Give with food.
Dramamine (give 25-50 mg one hour before traveling to prevent motion sickness). Try at home first.
Do not give Tylenol or Ibuprofen to any dog under any circumstances.
Add to the list of supplies at the end of the story, these from the story itself
Duct tape for temporary bandages
Rolled up newspaper for splint injured limbs
Super glue for temporary suturing

Not bad
The Auburn Alabama football game that is.
I don't even know why I bother to go on opening day of deer season anyway. I never kill one.
Oh, I see them. I saw a doe this morning followed by what looked like a six point, then

Off to the woods
to try and replenish the freezer with, hopefully, a suitcase deer and a sausage deer.
Pity the poor neighbors, as the "Girls" try to let me know that I forgot to load them up this morning.

Sigh!
Weather conditions with high winds, old fart hearing abilities and such have led to today's cancellation.
Shame it is. It's doubtful if we'll get to run the "Girls" for at least a week and a half due to gun season for deer opening up on Saturday.
Thankfully, Cuz holds the lease to the 1000 acre pine plantation in Seale, Alabama, so we'll probablly hunt it the week after Thanksgiving. That should give the deer hunters time to settle down and we won't start till after 9:30-10 to give them time to get off their stands. Usually, a lot of them would be hunting on a secondary piece of property in Pittsview, but I'm told that they are clear-cutting it now.

Heart worm pill day
for the girls.
And I talked to Cuz last night. He and Rye are busy cooking today and tomorrow for the Deer Season Eve dinner that Cuz's Boy and Tiny puts on for the deer hunters who pay for our rabbit lease.
heh
That leaves Thursday for a rabbit hunt, but I heard it's going to rain. We'll see.
Tiny "fixed" the road leading in. I'd say he fixed it real good. Before, while the ruts were deep, they were hardpacked and the old pathfinder just eased right through them wet or not. Now, trucks are sliding through the fifty yard stretch, cutting new ruts that haven't hardpacked yet. If it rains Wednesday and Thursday as predicted, it should be interesting as the large number of trucks come in for Friday's dinner and Saturday's opening day
The dinner has run the gamult from disasters to meals fit for a king
as noted in Pup's Thanksgiving Turkey

Hi Thinwater and Rick.
Glad to make your acquaintance. Readership is thin until January and February, then dropping back off till late in the next season. There’s about 20 browsers a day right now.
Remember that I’m no expert, just a good ol boy who likes to run his mouth. The Journal was at first a way to keep up with hunts and entertain relatives. Then I found out that kids on hunts enjoyed seeing pictures and reading about their hunt and would turn their friends on to the site. I figure it will be a good way for me to build good will with the lease holders of other property and maybe expand a shrinking sport some.
I try not to use to much profanity (mark of a small mind and it took quite a while to clean up my own gutter mouth) or sexual innuendos because of the kids. But I’m no prude.
I don’t hunt much on Sundays because of Church though I will attend an occasional Sunday afternoon hunt.
Djmed is our
t’shirt man over in Auburn ( don’t blame him. Dang good looking women at the university) and is having some caps made with a leaping rabbit and website underneath. I’m probably getting t-shirts, with a slightly different design, made to pass out to kids on any hunts, so if ya’ll (or anyone else for that matter, I’m sure djmed’s company wouldn’t mind the business) would like either, email me.
I don’t make anything on them and djmed gives me a kinfolks price.
Feel free to post about comments in your hunts, send pictures and such. I’m thinking about opening up the site to registered posters, so that you can post details, tips, pictures ( web friendly, not megafiles) and such directly. Again, if interested, let me know.
There will be no rabbit hunt notes today. I’m otherwise occupied

Gone Deer hunting
Yeah, I know, but Cuz canceled out this morning...something about a virus.
I'd be to short handed and I didn't recieve a confirmation from Mark.
I knew I shouldn't have pushed Cuz for a 7:30 start instead of 8

It was a short day today
And it will be a short hunt again tomorrow.
I really can’t understand why Cuz wants to meet at eight in the morning. We’re wasting a good hour of light.
This morning I fell in line behind a Russell County, Alabama school bus. It wasn’t long before 2 began telling me to cool down before I blew a gasket.
When my boys were young, they dang well had better be at whatever was the designated bus pickup point. Now days, it’s door to door pick up.
That might have been fine when the houses were scattered out, but this morning the bus would pick up two or three, move down fifty yards and pick up tow or three more. At one stop, as the bus moved down the road, I saw two young teens open the door to their house and slowly trudge across the yard. The bus patiently waited on them.
Then when I could pass the bus, he/she didn’t have any more houses for a while so they sped up to 65mph on the 45mph narrow two lane.
You might want to write up a bus driver or two, sheriff, before they have an accident and the other driver gets blamed. And Russell County Schools, you know when they say “do it for the children” I automatically vote “no”. This is why.
Ok, off the soapbox.
Rye and Cuz were waiting at the gate this morning when 2 and I got there.
Gone rabbit hunting
We're going to run the front pines at Seale.
I hate running this area during the week because it's a regular road for speeding logging trucks.
The East Alabama Rabbit Hunters and Souse Eaters Social Club, also, desperately needs some decent new blood.
Heck, land to. It would be nice to have some new blood that has the new land.
Heh.

Looks like Thursday
for the next rabbit hunt.
I have blood work tomorrow for a routine doctor's appointment next Monday and Cuz is committed on Wednesday.
I'll probably sit on a stand Wednesday morning and then prepare a blind or two for gun season.
I have to say my lack of enthusiasm for deer season is even worse than last year.
I'm thinking of setting up a picture page for the season. If anyone wants to contribute, email me at
rimfire at idlehourwebs dot com.
Dogs, Hunts, Kids on hunt, whatever, as long as it's connected to rabbit hunting.
Oh, and Cuz's dog,
Precious (what a name for a rabbit dog) had eight puppies yesterday. She was preggers by way of a copper beagle Cuz had. He died shortly after mating. The dog, not Cuz.
No word on if it was suicide or just that good.

I’d say “We” did pretty good this morning.
Three races
Three shots
Two rabbits
I’d say
“We” did pretty good this morning.
“I” on the other hand…..didn’t even get a shot. Of course, I could blame Cuz for cutting me off on the second race, but, then again, he probably
just saved me from a miss.
We started off at the “sand pit”.
Gone Rabbit Hunting
I’m so overdosed in chocolate that it’s a chore to get up and go rabbit hunting as planned with Cuz and Rye.
I’ve been trying to get rid of the excess candy from Halloween. Of course, as GF told me when she got home last night, if I had turned on the porch light and opened the blinds we might have had a trick or treater or two to help.
