About
The Rabbit Journal originally started out as a way to amuse family and friends. But it has started to attract other rabbit hunters and to you I say "Welcome". Feel free to comment, email and suggest. Just keep it clean
So it figures that tomorrows hunt has been canceled due to the fact that everybody, except Cuz and me, is working or at the doctors.
Saturday's hunt is in Harris County, Georgia and the Bleeker hunt has been moved to Sunday. I won't be able to attend since I'll be at Worship services, the same as djmed.
Hmmmm
I do think that the boy is smitten by the lass
on the Rabbit Journal t'shirts
Sending in the order on Sunday. I should mail the shirts by the following weekend
Gone to hunt meat since the rabbit hunt for today has been canceled
that I never fulfilled a childhood ambition of being a great white hunter.
If I can’t hit a charging buck rabbit with both barrels while jerking my foot away from the shot pattern, it’s unlikely that I could hit a charging lion in mid leap.
Right now, I would settle for being a pretty good white hunter
We thought that the first race would be the longest of the day after a two hour and five minute race in thick cover.
And despite the thick cover, the rabbit had a total of 10 shots fired at it before Rye killed it in a three shot barrage from his old old Sweet 16.
The third of February---Bleeker
The tenth of February---Hissop
Inbetween and after will be several "pickup" hunts besides the scheduled ones for Saturday's. We might even hunt Plunker's Chamber County property at least once more. The bird hunters place in Pittsview. Crapps old home place and several more
This weekend will be tough since it's the last weekend of deer season
YEAH!!!!!!
I have to many chores to write it up, at the moment, and if I'm going to go with 2 to Apalachicola next week, I need to keep GF happy. So I threw this video / slide show to hold ya'll over for a day or so.
Basics
We got 13 on two morning hunts. Only djmed, Brag and myself, rimfire, hunted on Sunday morning and we got six. Now for some bragging. I got three each morning though you know I don't keep up with such. And as alluded to in the comments in the previous post, you might want to buy stock in Federal shells. Heck, most anyone can get six rabbits out of a box of shells.
lol
Lot of rabbits, mainly in the planted pines and they were all sage'rs
finished packing for djmed's rabbit hunt near Jeffersonville, Georgia. Last year's was a good'un despite.....
Sigh!
I must be getting old. Used to I could grab my gun, rabbit hunting pack, stick my toothbrush in my back pocket and go.
Now I look like I'm moving
If you wondered what it sounded like when djmed and I tagteamed that rabbit on Plunkers land in Chambers County, here is audio
And if you wished that the Rabbit Journal 02-03 and 03-04 were in a searchable blog format, your wish has came true. I just finished back-loading them into the journal. I still need to add the pictures, but you can click the links to get there
These briars are kissing cousins of their southern neighbors in Lee County that I've wrote about so often
I fell once (ok several times, but this one sticks in my mind as well as my skin) and didn’t hit the ground. I was held about a foot off the ground by a combination of green briars and vines. I couldn’t get any leverage and must have looked like a turtle turned on its back as I tried to get back up.
Steep?
For a flatlander like me, it was tough. I stepped on a log and it started rolling down hill. I must have looked like one of those log rollers on a river in some of the Pacific Northwest logging areas.
Plunker's place packs a lot of acres into a small perimeter
for the MLK Memorial Day Rabbit Hunt went well considering there were only three and a half human hunters present along with the five "girls".
Cuz’s mother in law is in her early nineties and in poor health. He has just returned from a trip and said he might have to go back at any minute.
Rye, tends to hunt only with Cuz now. Yep, they’ve turned into a pair of teats, albeit saggy ones.
It was Brag, me (Rimfire), Earwig and one of his boys, the pre-teat Graham.
We only got two rabbits from two races but it wasn’t the dogs fault. They ran the first rabbit for almost two hours before Earwig got a shot and tumbled the running bunny. Brag and I were asking why he cut off Graham.
5th annual Martin Luther King Memorial Day Rabbit Hunt is a go.
We've scheduled a rematch at Plunker's property in Chamber's County, Alabama.
Guests--so far
Plunker and his son's, Plinker and Wiggles
djmed
Brag
Rimfire (me)
Maybe's
Cuz, Rye, Earwig and his two sons.
Even if Earwig can't make it, we might grab his two boys. Ain't nothing like having some kids on a rabbit hunt
making a new batch of t-shirts for The Rabbit Journal
$10 White
$11 Colors
$13 Long sleeve
Plus whatever the envelope and postage cost me.
I want a couple of long sleeves for those warm days, but still want something to protect my arms from the briars
These t’s are 100% heavyweight ringspun cotton, preshunk Hanes beefy-t
with quality work from djmed and crew over at Master Graphics.
These AREN’T iron-ons designs, but good silk screened jobs.
Pre order and you can pick the shirt color here. if it is available in the Hanes Beefy t or the long sleeve version. I like the orange (For some strange reason, most Alabama fans hate it), and the stone washed green
Drop me a line at

The design
No, there is no orange box on the shirts, that is a transparent.
The small one Rabbit Hunter with just the rabbit is over the left breast.
The large design is on the back
Shirts will look similar to last years. The main difference will be that the print is in black.
Pictures of last years shirts
Well, I’m pretty much the tech idiot.
Everything that I’ve learned is by pushing buttons and seeing what happens. Come to think of it, I do that with most every thing; relationships, marriages, work, vehicles,……..
Just remember, they make these things for us idiots to use. You can’t really hurt the camera by pushing buttons. Lose your pictures, yes. Damage the camera, no.
I’m currently using a cheap HP Photosmart R707 5.1 MP. How cheap is it? Pretty cheap, it belongs to 2. I’m not sure about the optical zoom (which is all I consider, forget the digital zoom) but it must be about a 3x or 4x. It’s simple and cheap. The video record button is a one step push button next to the one I take pictures with.
I prefer a camera with a viewfinder. Some cameras have deleted those in favor of the little picture screen that you can’t see out on the bay fishing or standing in that sunny field. You can get cameras with all the bells and whistles and buttons and gizmos, but they’re generally harder to use on the fly. You really want a camera that you can one hand since the other generally has a gun.
Most of my outdoors cameras are cheap. You don’t want a high dollar camera that you ‘re scared of dropping in the creek. Ok, falling in the creek with. Or slamming in the tailgate, dogs using it as a chew toy, getting to the other side of one of those hell’s half acres, only to find a empty case.
Heck, ya’ll are rabbit hunters, you can conjure up all the possible scenarios.
What djmed was talking about in the comments of the video post of this hunt was that we now have to watch what we say around Mystery. On the way back to the truck, when we were going to call it a day, we told the “girls” that we needed one more rabbit so that djmed could get one since even I had managed to shoot the butt off of a nice buck in a thicket where the shot was measured in feet and half feet.
The dogs lost the final rabbit that I had jumped from it’s bed at the end of a hollow log with a hole underneath. It was a good race, just how good we wouldn’t know for over an hour later.
a copy of this video to me. Naturally, being the cheap sort, I went to youtube to see if it was available where I didn't have to pay for the storage or bandwidth
Marktippins to see if Ruby could come out to play on Saturday and got a answering machine.
I called Cuz and got his machine
I called Rye and got his
So, it looks like it will be just Brag, djmed and myself tomorrow.
Here’s a few pics sent by KY Rick. He needs a little camera practice, but no more than I need shooting practice. Some might take that as the ultimate insult.
Oh, and by the way. Drop me a personal note in a different email than the pictures. I noticed that a spam trap had caught Tater's pics of Cuz's puppies.
