This is the archive for May 2007

I've been

trying to set up a summer exercise at Plunker's place in Chamber's county for this Saturday.
It looks like it's a go. I got this note from Plunker

"You are welcome anytime. If I don't have anything going on I might meet you up there. Some of the areas they tried to burn would not catch fire! No big deal though, the unburned area should have all the rabbits. when you get a chance."

I invited the Harris boys in Opelika to go with us, but unfortunately, they are tied up.

It doesn’t look like we (me and Will) are going to be able to go on the exercise. Will has to work, so we will have to do it another time. I did see a lot of rabbits during turkey season while harvesting 2 longbeards. hopefully before the season you will be able to run them here before and during hunting season.

I've just came back

From a visit to Doc Caldwell, The Rabbit Journals veterinarian.
Kate was in for your annual shots, while Dixie was being checked for that nagging cough. She had it last year, then it cleared up in the fall, only to return in late March.

There were no heartworms, but the x-ray shows that she has a very enlarged heart. The problem is probably congenital aggravated by allergies. Doc Caldwell put her on 12.5 mg of Lasix, twice a day for two weeks. If there isn’t an improvement, then a stronger medicine will be called for.

Last year I had to put Maizie, my favorite down. Dixie became my favorite hunting dog while Lucy stayed my favorite pet.
Lucy is now demanding that I demote her back to pack status since I seem to be the kiss of death on “favorites”

I see

that someone submitted The Rabbit Journal for the blog list at My OutDoor TV.
Thanks to whoever did it

Chiggers are back

Chiggars and redbugs to.
I know they're back two ways.
One is Saturday's exercise of the "girls" and keywords for the search engines.

The answer to the question that many of you are asking is "you can't". Nina Bicknese says so, like I've mentioned a couple of times

And I may as well, as hot weather sets in, make my annual mention of using baby powder in your underwear. Not for the chiggars, just for sheer comfort.
Use the stuff with real talc, not the corn starch. Corn starch rolls up in little balls between the cheeks.
Yeah, I know I've mentioned this before, even in comments.
Aren't re-runs great?

The first chance I get

I'm going to give 2 some picture taking lessons

rimfire and redfish

Fishing was only fair with a series of mishaps( dead battery in the 2+3. Thank goodness for our old friend from Phenix City who now guides on the bay, Captain Brownie), high winds and awkward tides.
I did catch this nice 24 inch redfish (while spooking one even bigger) in one of mine and 2's redspots back in the reed beds. The spot wouldn't even hold two good sized suv's.
A few more pictures of the trip

Chuck and Mikie white water the Hooch

Prologue
You, professionally attired, white water enthusiast, who are eagerly awaiting the authorities to tear out a couple of minor cotton mill dams so you can whitewater the Hooch are johnny come lately’s to rafting the rock strewn middle section of the Chattahoochee River at Phenix City, Alabama

Mikie and I have done it several times when the dam gates were open and the water flushing south.
We’ve white water rafted it. We’ve brown water rafted it. We’ve run it at flood stage .
Heck, once, we even done it on purpose.

It's that time of the month

The girls got their heartworm pills

Got a note from djmed

Our annual May Trip to Wheeler Lake was last week.
We had 15 anglers at this year's fishing rodeo. The bass were a little slow and small, but the cats and bluegills were on fire. We always go the first week of may and this year it coincided with the full moon. A few of the retirees got there Monday, so the totals were higher than previous years. Most of us working stiffs didn't get there til Wednesday, but 3 full days made for an Awesome trip!

The brightening of the eastern sky

heralded dawn as Brag and I pulled into the back fifty acres off of 39. That small plot butted up against the 1000 acre Seale deer lease where Brag and I spend many summer Saturday morning’s exercising the Rabbit Journals pack of beagles.

I'm testing

a batch resizer of pictures, so I've put a lot more pictures of the Apalachicola Antique Boat Show on the item page.
Dialups may take a minute

This is a bill,

HB263 (pdf), that could potentially have a impact on hunting, specifically hunting with dogs..

Fairly or unfairly, my fears are that I think one of the things (yes this is generalizing) is that it won’t be used to allow you to do something, so much as to stop me from doing something.

What I think we would see are advertisements promoting a constitutional amendment to outlaw the running of animals with dogs, ala Great Britain, or California or…. Picturing the cute lovable bunny interposed with pictures of snarling hounds fixing to rip them to shreds.
Yeah, I know.
You know.
But the city people don’t know.
They say there are geographic safeguards, that require 7% of the total vote for governor in each district to approve it before it moves forward for a general vote. That shouldn't be that difficult, I figure more than half of my fellow Alabamians are total idiots anyway

Of course, maybe we could use it to raise the out of state hunting license to a grand a year with a special “lease” tax for out of Stater’s of oh say $10 an acre and get a little of our property back for rabbit hunting

What ya been doing, Rimfire?

Well last weekend, GF and I got a wildhair and took off Friday evening till Sunday afternoon for a day of fishing (pretty good), boating (great weather) and the Apalachicola Antique Boat Show
