This is the archive for March 2007

I'm back

Fishing was good
Speckled trout 28 March 2007
Got into the Spanish Mackerel to.
Maintenance was done on the "2+3" to include replacing the bilge pump. More on that later.

Gone Fishing

2 and I are doing some maintenance on the "2+3" (for real this time) and getting in a little trout fishing.
GF says I've been underfoot long enough now
2+3

What you doing, rimfire?

Well, I'm busy on the grill
grilling the hamburgers
And it brought to mind a old post on redneckin

Soy burgers, anyone?
Brag came by the other evening to feed the dogs just as I was finishing up using the grill. He remarked that I had been doing a lot of grilling lately. And I have. Over the last few weeks, a varied mix of fish, fowl and mammals have found their way onto my charcoal grill. Only reptiles and amphibians are missing from the list. A temporary oversight, I’m sure.

I know some of you people say you’re going to fire up the grill when you actually mean you’re going out, turning on the gas and pushing the electronic ignition button Then you set around waiting for the fake rocks to heat up while your fake meat marinates in fake smoke.

Soy burgers, anyone?

The worst is yet to come

The light dusting started last week.

The Ridge Grove

Volunteer fire department BBQ and Brunswick Stew fund raiser looked like a success….to me.
Good Q and good stew though like Plunker said “get 20 people together and you’ll get 20 recipes for Brunswick stew. And each will be the best you’ve ever eaten. At least according to the recipes holders.”
1200 pounds of bbq and 450 gallons of stew. By the time Brag and I got there at 11 central, 250 gallons of stew were gone
Stirring the stew

I see that pictures from the 2007 Outdoor Alabama Photo Contest

will be touring the state.
"The 21 winning color photographs were all taken in Alabama, by Alabamian amateur photographers, within the last two years. Plants and animals in the photos are all native to the state. The winners represent seven categories, including: scenic/pictorial, birds, mammals, reptiles/amphibians/fish, other wildlife, nature-based recreation, and flora.
The collection will make its debut at Birmingham Botanical Gardens in April."

I’ve been conversing

with the Russell County Sheriff by email on a post I’m doing on another site when he mentioned he’s going fishing in Apalachicola shortly. Most of us old timers in the County know each other, or, of each other. I even let him meet me….after I made sure I didn’t have any warrants. The Sheriff first showed up on my site while googling Capt Brownie. Capt Brownie is a local boy who chucked everything and went to guide on the Apalachicola Bay. Turned out like most things around here that the Sheriff knew Brownie like he knew Most of the EARH&SESC.
Anyway, when he mentioned fishing it reminded me of a trip 2 and I took with Capt Brownie a few years ago

2 and I left early Wednesday morning for Apalachicola to do a little maintenance on the “2+3”, our 19 foot center console. She is an old Drumond, a heavy boat that plows through the chop with a sure and steady ride. We replaced the old Mercury 2 stroke with a Yamaha 115 four stroke. It sure is nice to turn the switch and expect the motor to start. The Yamaha is so quite that I have turned the key on an already running motor.

Leaving Phenix City about 6:30, 2 and I took time in Dothan to buy a tube of chalking to seal in the two tackle ports(?) I removed last trip. I had some vague theory about “fixing them up” over the holidays when I removed them. We won’t go into to how much “fixing them up” I did.

Things went so well that I started to get nervous. It’s usually when I’m on a roll that the rimfire luck kicks in.

Rule #1 If there are four bolts that need to be removed, then one will be stripped.
Rule #2 A minimum of one nut on said bolts will be rounded off. The offending nut will always be on the bolt that is not stripped
Rule #3 If none of the above apply, then a special tool will be needed to reach the offending part and will have to be special ordered before you can strip a bolt and round off a nut.
Rule #4 On arriving at the work site, it will be discovered that all instruction books and wiring diagrams will have been left on the counter where the parts were purchased and or some other inaccessible place.

Heart worm pills

all around for the girls today

I was talking to Plunker tonight

about several things mostly related to rabbits, property, turkey’s and a website I’m doing for his business when I remembered some important business.

Ridge Grove Volunteer Fire Departments BBQ and Brunswick Stew Fund Raiser is on March the 17th in Chamber's County, Alabama.
bbq
Times are pretty flexible starting from 11am central till 3 central though Plunker said the food gets a little thin by 3 and some people start getting there a little early.
In addition to the Q and Stew, there will be some baked goods to ease the sweet tooth.
You can buy in bulk to go.
$7 Plates to go.
Or just bring a healthy appetite, all you can eat for $8

I plan to be there. Brag has plans to go. And, of course, Plunker will be there having done some of the cooking. Say “Howdy” if you make it.

Directions from Phenix City

The "girls" are looking kind of bored

and there is still several weeks till the preseason exercises.
Here, they're enjoying their morning biscuit.
remember that shadow when taking pictures

Update
I know what you mean, Thinwater. GF has a list that's so long that if I get through with it before next October, I'll be lucky. Of course, I could do the same thing I did with last years list which was roll it over into this years.
This has been my project for the last couple of days.
tilled garden with carrots in the middle 07

Now I need to do a makeover on the water garden I put in for GF while we were still on a permanent date.

I plan to make Brag chunk me a lot of clays on the summer exercises this year.

The weather

was so nice that I used the Tilley on my trip to Apalachicola and when I came back, I dug out the “straws”
Yes, I know I usually don’t start wearing them till around Easter.
Personally, I blame global warming

Gone Fishing

2 and I are in Apalachicola doing some maintenance on our 19' centerconsol bay boat, the "2+3". And some fishing, of course.
Bundle up, KY

Gone Fishing

Cuz just called

Judy, age 11, passed away yesterday
Judy and rabbit

Judy was Cuz's pride and joy, by way of Uncle NoPass
Ain't never run no deer. Why everybody says so.
If Judy was running, it was a pretty safe bet it was a rabbit. The only time that I know that she ran something other than a rabbit was a bobcat on our first hunt with djmed.

She didn't hunt much late in the year. Usually the first at the gate and last to return to the box, the last couple of times she stayed in her house while the others were being loaded up.
We all knew that she was fading fast, but still....
Judy on log

She was a good one. One of the things that I pride myself on was that I was one of the few people that Cuz would loan her to

I would like to recognize

two new, more or less permanent, members of the East Alabama Rabbit Hunters and Souse Eaters Social Club.

djmed really should have been recognized as such a long time ago. I'll never forget that when we first saw him unfolding himself from his full sized truck that the first words out of my mouth were "Did any of you boy's tick somebody's husband off?" Not fat, he's just a big man. And like most big men, he's a easygoing individual.
Do I need to tell you which one is djmed?
Brag, rimfire, djmed

The newest member just turned up this year....Plunker.
He hunted hard with us this year, turned us on to some land, doesn't take offense at my writing and fed us rather well on our tailgate lunches. The last three being the most important.
Plunker

The last hunt

of the 06-07 Alabama rabbit season was a success. At least in my eyes since I killed three.
Heck, if I had only killed one it would have been a success over last year.

Plunker started us off, killing a big buck as you

Good Morning

and welcome to The Rabbit Journal 07-08.
There will be a couple of posts that relate to the previous Journal, but will be filed under the Rabbit Hunts 06-07 catagory.

I'll be tinkering with the site over the down time that will last for about two months as the turkey hunters take over the woods.
The skin is changed by default on all the previous posts. Any suggestions, "Hey man, that sucks" or other advice is appreciated.

I plan a roundup of the dogs, guns and some other posts to give you something to hang your hat on till the pre-season starts the first Saturday after the turkey season.
