The Rabbit Journal Tales

Cast of Characters for The Rabbit Journal’s, “East Alabama Rabbit Hunters & Souse Eaters Social Club“.

Dang, that’s a mouthful.
And, yes, we are. Characters, that is

You may call me Rimfire.
The dogs, mostly, call me boss or bossman, at least when I can hear them. No telling what they say behind my back. I’m in my mid fifties and am considered to be one of the most arrogant egotistical self-centered s.o.b.'s, most of my ex-wives have ever met. Leastways, according to them. I tend to favor wide brimed hats like panamas and pinch front fedoras along with a 16ga 29 Fox side by side that I like to shoot at rabbits.

Next would be Brag, Uncle NoPass’s grandson, we are co-owner’s of The Rabbit Journal’ pack of short legged rabbit beagles. A huge Auburn fan he also uses a side by side, only in the 20 ga flavor

Cuz, I suppose, you would call the property man. He knows more people than I’ve ever even met. In his early sixities, he favors a 20 ga Franchi? Semi. Cuz, aided by Rye, also owns a pack of beagles, "Judy and the Whoevers". Led by Judy, a very short legged beagle who truly has never ran a deer. As a matter of fact the only time that I know she has ran something besides a rabbit was when she ran a bobcat on a hunt with djmed in the wilds outside of Auburn/Opelika.

Rye is the most active of the senior elders. In his early seventies, he favors a old old Sweet 16 and is one of the most noticing men around.

We four make up the core of “ The East Alabama Rabbit Hunters & Souse-eaters Social Club.

There are two more permanent members of the EARH&SESC, djmed and Plunker recognized as such at the end of the 06-07 season .

djmed really should have been recognized as such a long time ago. I'll never forget that when we first saw him unfolding himself from his full sized truck that the first words out of my mouth were "Did any of you boy's tick somebody's husband off?" Not fat, he's just a big man. And like most big men, he's a easygoing individual. I met him by way of via email a couple of years ago and reported on our first hunt together titled “ @%^& Dogs!” in The Rabbit Journal 03-04 He is also the official t’shirt outfitter of The Rabbit Journal.

The newest member just turned up this year (06-07)....Plunker.
He hunted hard with us this year, turned us on to some land, doesn't take offense at my writing and fed us rather well on our tailgate lunches. The last three being the most important.

Uncle NoPass is the most senior member and was the focal point of “The NoPass Chronicals” until at the age of 83 he hung up his leash and gun. He is now the Honorary Elder.
Update: Uncle NoPass, "Ted Bailey" has passed away.

Associates, occasionals, relatives and people who have access to property (these people are worth their weight in rabbits) make up the remainder. Some of the deer hunters lower themselves to join our company in February. There are some who don’t want you to look at their land much less actually set foot on it. These will be the ones who in the long run destroy hunting by making it a sport of privilege like in England. Uncle NoPass was fond of saying that “deers are going to be the ruination of hunting”

Anyway, climbing down off my soapbox

There is Tiny, cook and builder of the dog boxes that carry the hired help. He is in residence on a pine plantation near Seale, Alabama most weekends throughout the year and is the main drill sergeant of the teats.

The Teats
Right teat also know as Dusty, Cuz’s grandson, and his sidekick left teat. The teat nicknames have stuck and have come to be applied to most of the youngsters in camp. The average age of the current crop is (shudder) 16. They got this nickname because like a woman's breast, if you see one, you, generally see the other.

The rest are a mishmash of young bucks who grace our presence when they get tired of being outsmarted cause they’ve already killed off the stupid and young deer.

Your say

I found your website today 12/21/2006 Let me say that I found it very entertaining and enjoyable to read. I have rabbit hunted over beagles in the past and miss it greatly. Unfortunately I now live in an area of town that prohibits me from owning dogs. I have two boys (14 &15) that are pushing me to take them rabbit hunting. I am hoping to find someone like you and your group to hook up with in my area. I live in Norman OK. Keep up the GREAT work on this website. It is nice to be able to read and remember.

Thank you

Pleased to make your acquaintance. Don't want to give me a case of the big head, do you?
lol
We’re pretty informal around here. I would also suggest, except for bare bones of the number of rabbits, the who of the shots and other basics, the rest should be read with tongue in cheek and a subtle sense of humor

My name is Hudson Shelley,I am from Dothan Alabama and I have four beagles.I am only 13 years old but I was wondering if your beagle club is only for the people in your area or could I join and if I could would i have to pay a membership fee or something. The reason why im wondering is because i have only a little bit of land to run my dogs on.I got my first two beagles last year and they are pretty good but i have two 5 month old pups that are just getting the hang of things. If it is where we might could work something out just let me know.I have talked to my parents and they said that if i could get in then they would have to discuss the situation then let me know if i can get in once everything is settled.
