The Rabbit Journal Tales

Well, my friends, another hunting season is upon us.

Rabbit Season starts this Saturday though the weather doesn’t match the season or my mood. I’m still in fishing mode while some of my Georgia friends have been primitive weapon hunting for four weeks or so. No. lol. Not now, djmed. I’m saving my annual primitive weapon rant for a couple more weeks .
I’m just not in the killing mood….yet.
Maybe it’s the thought of sitting in a tree, 94*, mosquitoes and no see’ums raising welts on my exposed sweaty flesh and actually killing a deer.
Then I have to find him. You know, with a bow, he heads into the next bottom with the steepest slope and the meanest briars before falling. Gut him, Drag him, Process him. No, there’s plenty of time for that yet when the weather cools down and I have a kid along.

What got me on this subject tonight is that I was getting my rabbit hunting gear together. The 16ga 1929 Fox double barrel is safely in the gun safe. If you want it, you going to have to work for it.

Wasn’t much packing involved. The soft $5 camo packback that I bought a few years ago at some clearance sale had all of last years gear still in place. You know you find rabbits in the dangest places, like this one swimming across the Chattahoochee River, a river that is so fierce that even the mighty Army Rangers are banned from fishing on certain sections. Pretty well pleases me, less competition for a good fishing spot.

Now where was I? Oh yeah, the pack.
Have you ever seen the front of the old courthouse in Seale?

It’s a shame they won’t move back. I know most of the citizens in this county are in Phenix City, but it would spur development between Seale and Phenix City. There are at least two advantages. One is taking some of the development pressure off of south Lee county/north Phenix City, one of Columbus‘s larger mill towns, so to speak. This is a bedroom community area with nothing to really support the Phenix City government but property taxes since most everybody works and shops over in Columbus while consuming Phenix City services.
And two is the development would be strictly in Alabama with nothing in the way of “progress” but pines and briars
Er, wait. ya’ll just forget it

Oh yeah, the pack
Do you realize how many posts have been done on just redneckin (my general bs blog about Phenix City, Alabama that mention rabbit hunting?

Anyway, most of my gear was still in the pack except for the snake chaps which I’ve been using and the Fox in the gun safe .
The orange vest, kind of ratty but a ratty with character, still has a full load of 16ga 7 ˝ shot in the pocket loops, a spare dog rope, compass to keep me lost I only one direction, a couple of old peppermints and peanut hulls and a bottle of water.
Besides the vest, there is a light change of clothes in case I fall in the creek or I get caught in a down pour. Either are pretty likely.
And a 99 cent disposable poncho that would last about a minute considering where I walk is not a stroll along a park path. But it’s place in the pack generally assures that when I need a rain jacket, I’ll have one…….back at the truck in the pack.

Not a whole lot of “stuff”, just the necessities. Just add dogs.
