The Rabbit Journal Tales

Dog tired

Julie and Dixie looked wore out when I got them from the pen this morning for another hunt at the Capps place. Only Maizie showed any spark, but then she is always a happy dog.

The Rabbit Hunters decided to get while the getting was good and decided to go out to the Capps place for the third time in a row. After today, we've killed 24 rabbits in two half day and one full day of hunting

Uncle NoPass was going on his first and only rabbit hunt of this season, but canceled at the last minute. His eighty four years have caught up with him. It’s sad, but an era has passed. Today Cuz and I couldn’t buy a rabbit. We must have used up all our luck yesterday. Brag and Rye, however were hot, getting two a piece. Even Tiny
managed to hit one with his over and under skeet gun. It had to run over his foot , but he got it.

Rye started us off by killing a young buck on his second circle. He missed him on his first. Julie and Dixie jumped the rabbit first and hunted well all day.
Rye got his second rabbit after he ran up, then back down a creek. Cuz had suggested that we walk into the thick briars where the dogs had lost him.
He saw the rabbit but couldn’t get a shot with the dogs, not to mention me in the way. I should have stayed where I was, straddling the creek. Instead I moved to one side of the creek. The rabbit crossed where I had been standing and Rye’s old Sweet 16 barked once.

The dogs preformed admirably, running the last rabbit for an hour and fifteen minutes before
Brag killed him in some of the thickest tangles on the property. I have to admit I had my doubts this morning when I got them from the pen

We quit at lunch though the dogs didn't seem tired. I think it was more us than them, but Brag is scheduled to hunt tomorrow weather permitting. NOAA says it's 100% rain tomorrow, but the hunt will depend on when the rain arrives
