The Rabbit Journal Tales

Be careful out there.

Why am I doing this post?
Well, if you didn’t slog through my post on Saturday’s pre-season exercise, you don’t know that Kate was snake bit.
There are four types of poisonous snakes in our area;
The Coral which generally isn’t a problem since it bites more than strikes
The evil tempered Water Moccasin , but no water was in this area.

The most likely culprit was it’s cousin, the Copperhead which is plentiful or rattlesnakes, timber and diamondback.

Kate is the first dog we’ve had bitten in several years of running our dogs. Tiny who used to run coon dogs has had two bitten. It’s rare, but it does happen.

Wear your snake chaps and watch where you put your feet and plant your butt.

Liberally, apply bug spray
Chiggars and ticks and lyme.
Oh my

No, I don’t like a leash as I call a cellphone, but it is a valuable tool.

When the logging trucks are rolling, try not to run areas next to the roads they travel. Nothing can quite mess up a pack of dogs like one of those behemoths.

Keep a first aid kit for both the humans and the animals
A suggested list of first aid materials for your dogs

Old wash cloths for washing big areas

Hydrogen peroxide to induce vomiting in case of accidental poisoning

Commercial ice packs like the ones used to treat sports injuries

Kaopectate liquid to treat diarrhea

Benadryl (give 1-2 mg per pound every eight hours to treat bee stings or bug bites or 4 mg per pound for snakebites).

Buffered aspirin (give 5 mg very 12 hours for pain). Make sure the pill does not contain caffeine or other additives. Give with food.

Dramamine (give 25-50 mg one hour before traveling to prevent motion sickness). Try at home first.

Do not give Tylenol or Ibuprofen to any dog under any circumstances.

Duct tape for temporary bandages

Rolled up newspaper for splint injured limbs

Super glue for temporary suturing

Your say

The frist aid kit is a good ideal.Every dog man should keep one.How is your lyme disease going?I got out for a while yesterday, even followed the dogs some.I use deep woods off an still had 10 ticks on me.Mia gets bent out of shape over pulling them off my back.If we can get some rain I'm looking foward to a good season starting here nov.1

an old timer i know told me to give lard to a snake bit dog. ever heard of that?

Posted by djmed at 07/16/07 11:17:10

Ain't heard that one.
I don't know what good it would do besides making you feel good by doing something even if it don't work.
You been talking to Rye, again?

Thanks for commenting back,I would love to go on a pre-season exersize run or just a regular hunt.We do have tons of farmland around here.As a matter of fact my dad farms. We farm mostly peanuts and cotton but we also have corn, soybeans, wheat, watermelons and canteloupes. There are some rabbits aroun these areas but not quite enough. If I started a Dothan branch would I be able to call myself a member of your club? This is no big deal,I am just curious.I told my dad that you commented me back and he said that i just need to keep getting information and he and my mom would have to keep discusing the fact but that he would have to talk to me as well about hunting with yall.I also understand that this is no joking matter and I take my hunting very serriously. From my observations,my dogs are alrite. The best one is my only male,Bo.Although i do think it would be good for him to run with experienced hounds such as yours.I have a small kennel that consists of four 5 by 10 runs and one 10 by 10 pen.Just out of curriosity do you or anny of your hunting partners have anny started hounds that are for sale.Again this is nothing serrious its just something I thought I would ask.Again thanks for commenting back.See ya!

Yep, You could be a member of the Dothan branch of the East Alabama Rabbit Hunters and Souse Eaters Social Club or the EARH&SESC whichever is easier to remember and it would entail all the privileges, rights and whatnots all the regular members have, which ain't much more than the vast amount of prestige we enjoy.
After we get up an order for hats and shirts, I'll send one in your size

Remember that most of what I write is tongue in cheek and I make fun of most everything though my favorite target is myself.

Started dogs?
You might check over at the Beagle Board. Trouble is most of the time you buy another man's troubles.

KY Rick had some advice for Hover on the matter at this post

Better tell Hover to stay away from dog jockies.I've been burned a few times, not saying they would lie to a man,but they might not tell the whole truth.Hover, ask the man why he's selling a dog,try to get a trail period.Try to see his kennels,he may not take good care of his dogs.Remenber,a good dog 2-5 yrs old will cost $200.00-$500.00.Best of luck in your search for a dog.
