The Rabbit Journal Tales

The last hunt

of the 06-07 Alabama rabbit season was a success. At least in my eyes since I killed three.
Heck, if I had only killed one it would have been a success over last year.

Plunker started us off, killing a big buck as you can’t see since I managed to lose my first camera in the woods on the last day which explains the lack of pictures at redneckin of the sever weather that we had on Thursday.

Cuz killed the next one, also a big buck rabbit

I followed up killing one that hid in a brush pile for a moment as the “girls“ trailed behind. His ears lit up in the morning light a bright pink V pointing directly at the top of his head.

Then I killed another one as he ran out of a briar patch. I was ready for him, the sudden flight of song birds giving me the signal, he was coming. I was kneeling down, so I could see under the pines and I still missed despite the signal. Then I fumbled around trying to find my other trigger before I fired my other barrel. The rabbit kept going out of sight. The dogs came through the area and then fell silent. When I got to them, Julie was standing guard over yet another big buck.

My third came a scant few minutes later when I jumped. I had a easy going away shot that I passed up. Heck, I had two already, why risk a miss, er I mean, why not give Brag a shot since he hadn’t seen one yet.
The bunny made a tight circle and reappeared at my feet. I just couldn’t pass him up again.

After lunch, Brag got hot and killed two. One a sager, the other a big buck. The big buck ran a heck of a race on a tough steep hillside.

Final score
Rimfire 3
Brag 2
Plunker 1
Cuz 1

Sigh! I can’t believe it’s over already
