The Rabbit Journal Tales

I killed a young doe,

a suitcase deer, the day after Thanksgiving. After I quartered her, I cut the two hind legs off with a set of pruning lopers and wrapped them good in plastic before putting them on ice.

Yesterday, I put the “collars” on Lucy and Abbie, then I went and drug a leg across the backyard.

Lucy was first. She raced across the yard and almost somersaulted when she hit the deer smell. She tracked it the 15 yards to it’s hiding place. I popped her on “3”. She yelped and ran back to the pen.

Abbie to found the smell interesting and she got similar treatment.

Today, Lucy hit the track and immediently ran over to me. Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me.

Abbie, though, once again trailed the deer’s leg. First, I nicked her and watched her jump, then pick up the trail again. This time as she reached to the leg, I nailed her on “3” continuous. She ran back to the pen.

Now I have a decision to make. Let it rest a few days till I get a rabbit to drag before doing the deer treatment again or just go ahead with the deer scent

Your say

I never heard of doing it that way,but it sounds great. I've got one about 6 mos. old may need the same treatment. I forgot to take pictures on last hunt,2 rabbits killed,4shots fired think i'll go back to the winchester 59 s/a.

You know if your dogs get "collar" wise and run trash when they're not wearing it, I've cut a piece of treated 2x2 the same size as the shocker, drilled holes through it and used screws to fix it to a old collar.

Have you ever completley broke beagles from running deer? Mine will open up on one and as soon as I shock any dog they'll immediatley all quit. That lets me know that they know they are not supposed to run them. They just do it anyway to see if they can get away with it. The next time I start pups I'm going to load small mouse traps with deer parts in the training pen.

lol
Nope.
I could have sworn that I had Julie and Dixie broke till they went with Lucy on the first of October.
They seem to do it once a year now, just to test me. I haven't had a problem with any of them but Lucy since and she's settling down. Kate knows what the collar is and behaves as long as she is wearing it thus a dummy collar to free up the working units

Abbie is just a pup and I'm trying to give her a little aversion therapy before hand
